I was sitting here trying to figure out what I wanted to write about today and I think hey, what about Steve Earle? I have always enjoyed his music since the 80’s and Copperhead Road. I mean I even like his later, folkie stuff you know. So I went and Youtubed him and the first thing that pops up is a protest song. Now the song seems to be a good song but I just couldn’t seem to get past the opening. Now some of you may have read the about page on this site and realize I am a soldier. Now I am not a politically minded guy. I also try and keep an open mind and realize that this is America. The right to free speech is an incredible right to have. So here I am going to exercise my right also. Dixie Chicks, Steve Earle, Bruce Springsteen, and anyone else that enjoys the benefit of being a public entertainment figure remember some of your fans may just be soldiers, loyal Americans, and people who love this country and joined the military because we believe in this thing we call These United States of America. Now I understand the argument that you are just protesting what you feel is a corrupt government. You may have issues with the current group of politicians up on the hill but the thing you have to remember is that Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines not only have to follow the orders of those appointed over them but they also need to believe in those orders. It can be a hard thing being a member of the military during a time when the war or wars that our country fights become unpopular in the public eye. You see no matter what, members of the military take an oath. Now what am I asking here? First stop saying you support our troops and then turn around and talk about our leadership. Believe it or not you do not support the troops if you run down the country they fight for. Also stop using patriotic sounding songs to pursue your agenda. It is morally wrong in my eyes and a contradiction. If you would stop and think about I think you would see it as clear as I do. Now for those artist that have never served their country or wanted to all of this may seem hard to understand. If you want a platform to speak from thats okay, this is America after all, just don’t use the backs of the members of our military to do it from. We serve because we want too. We volunteered to be a part of something bigger than ourselves and our ego’s. Am I saying you don’t give? No but I am asking are you ready to give your life? We are, that’s our job. If you want to support us then volunteer for a USO tour. If not then be clear what your agenda is and stop saying you support us.

Here is the video from YouTube;

These view expressed are mine and in no way reflect the views of the government or the military.

Jerry Lee won Comeback Album of the Year at the 2007 Blues Music Awards for Last Man Standing and as far as I can tell it is justly deserved. Now it is a album where he covers a lot of other people stuff but he seems to do a very good job on it. Now I never have been a great fan of The Killer. There is no reason behind it but I just didn’t listen to his stuff. Well after listening to a few tracks off of this new album I guess I may have to pick it up.

Now Jerry Lee has had a very long career. You could say that his career started back in his youth when he began playing piano with his cousins. You may have heard of them, Mickey Gilley and Jimmy Swaggart. Like most from the south he cut his teeth on gospel while being influenced by the sounds coming from the juke joints. He cut his first demo back in 1954 and tried to peddle it in Nashville but it wasn’t until two years later he was able to convince Sun Records producer Jack Clement to record it. Yep the same Sun Records that you hear of when people talk about Cash, Presley, or Carl Perkins. It is there that he recorded Great Balls of Fire and Whole Lot of Shakin’ Goin’ On. The only thing is that his early success was somewhat short lived because of the little scandal surrounding his marriage to his second cousin.

It took many years for him to recover and get back on the charts on a regular basis. It was country music that did it for him. Through his career revival he was able to go back to doing his special kind of piano infused rock and roll boogie. He is still enjoying success today and you can still enjoy one of the most energetic musicians around when you go to one of his shows. If you get the chance don’t miss it though. You never know if you will get another chance.

Check out some of his albums from Amazon.com like Last Man Standing: Live or The Complete Million Dollar Quartet .

I am going to leave you with a little video of Jerry Lee Lewis, Fats Domino, and Ray Charles. You need to watch it, it is an awesome video.

I used the Jerry Lee Lewis site, the Wiki on him, and The blues foundation site as references.

Well I promised a review on some Myspace bands so here is the first;

Pat Savage has been around the music and biker scene for over 25 years touring and living the lifestyle. He has a style of music that has that biker feel. His is a kind of unpolished and free feeling music that knows the road. I have been listening to his stuff for a few months now and I can honestly say I enjoy his music. He has a hint of Blues, some classic rock sound, and hard driving biker all tumbled together for a great mix. Check out this montage and tell me what you think;

Sorry about the delay in getting post up here, I have been real busy for the past week. The movers are here today loading up my stuff and they will be here again tommorow. I won’t be leaving Belgium until July but we are trying to get our stuff out of here now so it will be waiting on us when we get there. I am going to try and push out a good article later tonight on something other than Blues or Jazz (I guess some of you thought that was all this blog was about). I have been wanting to review a few bands that are on Myspace and I guess now is the time for it. They will mostly be rock bands but I will try and find a few others. I also plan on continuing my article on this years Blues Awards winners but I want to be able to give you well researched stuff so those may take me some time. In the meantime I will leave you with a wonderful video from The Clash. Here is Rock the Casbah (unexpected huh?)
